Diagnostic Technologies for the Point-of-Care in the Developing World

On November 15, CODEV had the pleasure to welcome Dr Klapperich for a lecture, where she discussed how the field of molecular diagnostics could improve global Healthcare in developing countries.




Dr. KIapperich is the Director of the Laboratory for Diagnostics and Global Healthcare Technologies, Boston University.

Her laboratory focuses on the design and engineering of manufacturable, disposable systems for use in low-resource settings at the point-of-care.

Innovative solutions have, for example been proposed to perform microfluidic sample preparation for bacterial and viral targets from several human body fluids. These technologies include nucleic acid extraction, protein extraction, microorganism enrichment and/or concentration and small-scale dialysis.

Dr. Klapperich’s lab is currently working on devices for the detection and quantification of HIV, hemorrhagic fevers, infectious diarrheas, influenza, MRSA and cancer biomarkers. Current projects include detection by PCR, isothermal amplification, and novel optical techniques. The approach considers assay development, device design, sample flow, storage and transport, all opportunities to reduce the cost and increase the accessibility of molecular tests in the developing world.
