The National Taiwan University Ranking 2016 has placed EPFL at the first place in the Chemistry category, and #12 in the world.

The “Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities” is released by National Taiwan University, and is also known as the NTU Ranking. It ranks by overall research performance, performance in six fields, and ranking by 14 selected subjects.

This system evaluates the performance of scientific papers published by each university, and it is designed to compare both the quality and quantity of scientific papers from each one and in every category: “Through examining long-term academic performance and short-term research efforts, we look forward to providing a more objective ranking as a reference for the diverse research performance of universities worldwide."

This year, the NTU ranking has placed EPFL at first place in the category of Chemistry in Europe, passing high-profile institutions like the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. In global terms, the NTU ranking places EPFL Chemistry in the 12th place worldwide. The NTU also put EPFL Physics #6 in Europe and #17 in the world, while EPFL Mathematics ranked #20 in Europe.

“This is one of a series of recent studies that highlights how well our colleagues both in ISIC and across the EPFL are doing in research at the bleeding edge of Chemistry innovation, worldwide,” says Lyndon Emsley, director of EPFL’s Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering (ISIC). “Importantly, rankings are not an objective in themselves, and this result is a mirror of how chemistry research at EPFL is having a tremendous impact on society and the economy. Its a vital area for the future, with more than 15% of European GDP being a product of the molecular sciences.”
