In June 2012, Mandana Sarey Khanie, PhD Candidate at LIPID, with the objective of exploring methodologies and strategies for visual comfort measurements was able to carry out an academic visit to LBNL thanks to a Mobility Award from the EDCE Award.

The Window and Daylighting group at LBNL has a solid record of high impact scientific research in the field of daylighting. It employs its fine facilities to support research on recognizing high performance façade systems with visual comfort as one of the main performance criteria.

Her research has been focusing on understanding view direction dependencies of glare and visual comfort perception in daylit offices. During her studies, she presented her research progress to the team of experts at the LBNL who are facing similar questions for visual comfort evaluations in their ongoing projects at the LBNL’s Window Testbed facilities. The visit included site visits to the Window Testbed facilities, meetings and a presentation followed by constructive discussions underlining the potentials and future concerns of the PhD project.

Understanding the experimental methodology and strategies for visual comfort measurements developed by this group at the early stage of her PhD research has had a positive impact of the project and its continuous development. Mandana is expected to defend her thesis on April 27th, 2015.
