“It's the variety I like.”

STEFANO PENNESE – Master in Computer Science, class of 2007 – Consultant at ERM, London.

Data management in a multinational petrochemicals firm, teaching at a secondary school in Rwanda and an in-house post at an environmental consultancy – at first glance, there’s not much to link these three activities. In fact, it’s the variety that I find interesting, and computer science is the common thread in these different professional experiences.

After obtaining a Master in Computer Science from the EPFL in 2007, a few years in the “real world” allowed me to appreciate the depth of teaching I had received there. The quality of the degree program gave me a solid grounding of scientific knowledge, which has helped me to communicate effectively with professionals both in my field and in other branches of science – and even in non-scientific disciplines.

Looking back, the courses, activities and associations at the EPFL gave me the ideal variety of experience needed to work in this highly dynamic and indeed uncertain world. Moreover, EPFL achievements – which are regularly reported in the media – always make me proud to have studied at this magnificent campus.
