EPFL Professors János Pach and Joachim Krieger have been elected as fellows of the American Mathematical Society.

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) was founded in 1888 with the goal to further mathematical research and scholarship. Today, AMS membership counts nearly 30,000 individuals and 580 institutions from all over the world, including EPFL. It carries out its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its applications. Its efforts also support mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and the way it connects to other disciplines and everyday life.

By the title of “Fellow in the AMS”, the Society recognizes those among its members “who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.” The Fellows program aims to create a class of mathematicians who are recognized by their peers as “distinguished for their contributions to the profession and to honor excellence.”

The AMS has now has elected fifty mathematicians from around the world as new Fellows (class of 2016). Among them, the AMS has elected two professors from EPFL’s School of Basic Sciences:

Professor János Pach, who holds the Chair of Combinatorial Geometry. The AMS recognizes his “contributions to discrete and combinatorial geometry and to convexity and combinatorics.”

Professor Joachim Krieger, who holds the Chair of Partial Differential Equations. The AMS recognizes his “contributions to nonlinear hyperbolic equations.”

"I'm delighted to join with the AMS in recognizing and celebrating the inspiring accomplishments of the 2016 class of AMS Fellows,” says AMS President Robert L. Bryant. “It is a pleasure to welcome them and thank them for their manifold contributions to our mathematical culture."
