Prof. Mancini awarded the Sinergia Grant

Congratulations to Professors Loriano Mancini (Swiss Finance Institute@EPFL), Harald Hau (University of Geneva), Norman Schürhoff (University of Lausanne), Angelo Ranaldo and Jan Wrampelmeyer (University of St. Gallen) who have been awarded the prestigious Sinergia Grant from the Swiss National Fund of CHF 2.1m for their project “The Empirics of Financial Stability”.

The research team of Harald Hau (UniGE), Loriano Mancini (EPFL), Norman Schürhoff (UniL) and Angelo Ranaldo and Jan Wrampelmeyer (both UniSG) won the 2014 Sinergia grant competition of the Swiss National Science Foundation. They are jointly granted CHF 2.1m for their three year research project titled “Empirics of Financial Stability”.

The goal of this joint research project is to explore the sources, channels, and consequences of frictions in the financial sector for financial (in)stability. The analysis is structured around four interrelated themes:

A. Bank Compensation and Bank Risk Taking (Harald Hau)
B. Money Markets (Angelo Ranaldo and Jan Wrampelmeyer)
C. Financial Intermediation Frictions and Asset Prices (Norman Schürhoff)
D. Systemic Risk and the Real Economy (Loriano Mancini)


The common objective is to produce policy relevant research to guide future regulation.

According to the SNSF, a total of 89 proposals were submitted, including 11 in the Social Sciences. Only two proposals in the social sciences were selected.
