«Circulation» is the theme of this year's call for proposals CROSS (Collaborative Research on Science and Society). CROSS supports transdisciplinary research projects UNIL-EPFL.

CROSS aims to support research projects that bring together UNIL and EPFL researchers in transdisciplinary projects that explore contemporary socio-technical challenges. The programme is intended to kick start collaborations in the domains of social sciences and humanities together with engineering, natural and life sciences. All researchers based at EPFL or UNIL are welcome to apply for this year’s call on the theme of circulation.

Circulation

It’s in the 18th century that the metaphor of circulation, breaking away from its original field of geometry and mechanics, becomes all-invasive: circulation of blood and planets, money and goods, electricity and magnetism, ideas and books, circulation of water and air or erotic and venereal circulation. Today, as at the time of the Enlightenment, the idea of circulation is still associated with those of "movement", "life", "evolution" and "progress." Yet its multiple present-day avatars in countless areas of science (biology, physics, computer science, geography, economics, sociology, history, etc.), need to be studied and analyzed without prejudice.

This third round of CROSS calls for proposals will mainly support projects addressing several of those aspects in a scientifically original and promising way, while leaving room for proposals pertaining to other themes.

Proposals

The closing date for this year's call for proposals is 30 September 2014.
