The second conference 0-carbon took place on 20th November 2013 at the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (EIA-FR). In the category “Architectural approaches”, Prof. Marilyne Andersen, Head of the laboratory LIPID and Dean of ENAC, spoke on building envelopes as an interface between environment and well-being. This architectural approach also illustrates the collaboration frame that is currently set up with EIA-FR and UniFR (see the article on the Smart Living Lab project in Fribourg - in French only).

After a welcome message by Dr Beat Vonlanthen, State Councilor and Director of economy and employment in Fribourg, the successive speakers started off with presentations under the general title “Towards a sustainable built environment” with themes on buildings in a context of climate policy and sustainability at the neighborhood level. The carbon footprint of companies, the life cycle analysis of buildings etc… were then addressed, followed by a series of topics on sustainable building technologies, urban environment and energy transition.

Amongst these, the presentation by Marilyne Andersen, who chose to put in the heart of the discussion issues on passive approaches and daylighting. The combination of climate science, statistics, lighting and thermal analysis can bring promising answers on optimizing a building’s form – from building massing to the specifics of façade.
