Web 2010

Further to the inauguration of the Rolex Learning Center, the new major EPFL project this summer is a virtual one. The challenge involves turning the .epfl.ch Web domain (~1500 sites and tens of thousands of pages) into a communication tool to meet the institution’s major needs in terms of communication and image.

This project - Web2010 – focuses on four major themes:

- displaying information (graphic design, corporate image, ease of reading…)

- organising information (user-friendliness, navigation, layout…)

- updating content (intranet vs. internet, translations, obsolete content…)

- technology upgrade (home page, CMS Jahia, News tool, accessibility, statistics…).

The graphic design and ergonomics have been submitted to the various EPFL departments. You may have had a taste of things to come at the Webmasters’ Conference. Further to the various observations made, we have updated these tools to better meet your needs. The KIS is currently developing these models to turn them into actual Web pages.

Major changes in layout include, among others:

- pages structured in the form of a grid on which the various items are placed

- pages with a set width and more readable characters

- same banner, including the search engine and overall links, throughout the institution

- standardised navigation on all sites in the form of a horizontal bar with drop-down menus.

The “News” tool is also being upgraded to ensure better circulation of news. From now on, each unit may draw up articles, to be placed in a shared pool, from which the webmasters of the main EPFL sites and homepage will extract information. Thus everyone will be able to get the news feeds of interest to them.

Web 2010 will go live on 6 September, but it is never too late to migrate your website!
