Antonio Loprieno, President of the Rectors’ Conference of the Swiss Universities (CRUS), and Martin Vetterli, President of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), issued the following joint communication to Swiss academic institutions, requesting support to collect data on Switzerland’s non-association in “Horizon 2020”.

Due to the non-involvement in the European research framework “Horizon 2020”, Swiss research is under pressure. Researchers working for Swiss research institutions have thus been excluded from participation in European Research Council (ERC) funding programmes. The issue should be resolved at the political level. We can nevertheless contribute to discussions.
As scientists, we are required to argue based on facts. In the current context, we must join forces: help us collect accurate data on the negative, and possibly positive effects of this exclusion. What are the consequences on research funding, researchers and institutions? As it is not always possible to collect measurable data, we are also interested in hard to quantify effects you might witness.
We count on your support! We will get relevant data only if we all put our hands in the dough. The information collected will be used in close collaboration between SERI and the research network FUTURE (SNSF, CRUS, KFH, COHEP, Swiss Academies of Sciences). We would be grateful if you could enter your details and complementary comments in the database (http://www.snsf.ch/h2020-case-register) before end of August 2014. We intend to enter additional data during the winter semester.
