Gabriele Pellegrino

Gabriele joins the Chair of Innovation and IP Policy from SPRU, University of Sussex, where he was a research fellow. He earned a PhD in Economics at the University of Barcelona, in 2014. He will share his time between EPFL and the World IP Organization in Geneva.

Gabriele’s research interests are mainly focused on the theory and micro-econometrics of innovation, industrial policy, firm growth and industrial dynamics. His current research seeks new insights into the peculiarities and determinants of different types of firms’ innovation activities and their effects on corporate growth. To this aim, he applies advanced econometrics techniques to high-quality datasets. In his current work, specific emphasis is given to the study of the effect of persistence in innovation on sales growth as well as its persistence at firm level.

Providing a careful characterization of the nature of this relationship has clear relevance for policy implication. Indeed, since innovation is regarded as a key driver of firm performance, innovation persistence may be an important cause of sustained competitive advantage and long-lasting differences in firms’ performance. Gabriele’s past research has focused on analysis of the nature and effects of barriers to innovation, with emphasis on factors that may cause firms’ failure in engaging in innovation. His research has also focused on the characterization of determinants and peculiarities of brand new or young firms’ innovative activities.
