Two EPFL mathematicians elected members of the Academia Europaea

The School of Basic Sciences is pleased to report on the election of János Pach and Alfio Quarteroni -along with 11 other distinguished mathematicians- to the Academia Europaea during its annual plenary conference on July 18 in Barcelona.

The Academia Europaea is a European, non-governmental association acting as an Academy whose aim is to promote education and research in Europe and to strengthen interdisciplinary and international exchange in science. The honorable membership in the academy is granted on invitation to leading European scientists on suggestion of a panel of experts. The choice is confirmed by the council of the academy.

The Academy was founded in 1988, and now has some 3000 members from thirty-five European countries and eight non-European countries.
The membership includes leading experts from the physical sciences and technology, biological sciences and medicine, mathematics, the letters and humanities, social and cognitive sciences, economics and the law; amongst them 54 Nobel prizes and 13 Fields medalists.
