Scientastic kindles the public's interest in science

Published:15.11.18 — The public descended on EPFL’s campus this past weekend, 10 and 11 November, for Scientastic. Some 17,000 visitors took part in the fifth edition of the school’s science fair, the theme of which was “digitalization at your fingertips.”

Immunity connects gut bacteria and aging

Published:13.11.18 — EPFL scientists have discovered how a dysfunction in the immune system can cause an overload of a gut bacterium. The bacterium produces excess lactic acid, which in turn triggers the production of reactive oxygen species that cause damage to cells and many age-related pathologies.

Innovating within Lausanne's medieval stone walls

Published:13.11.18 — Starting this coming Saturday, an opera will be staged in Lausanne Cathedral for the very first time. Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco will be performed by the Amabilis orchestra, the Horizons choir and a number of world-renowned soloists, on a highly imaginative set. The capacity crowd of 760 people will sit on special wooden bleachers – assembled without nails, screws or glue – that were developed by EPFL’s IBOIS lab. 

Hidden estrogen receptors in the breast epithelium

Published:09.11.18 — EPFL scientists have uncovered that next to estrogen receptor-positive and -negative cells, there are cells with very low amounts of the receptor protein. The discovery has significant implications for the role of the receptor in the growth and development of the breast and breast cancer.

Yusuf Leblebici appointed president of Sabancı University

Published:09.11.18 — Yusuf Leblebici, the head of EPFL’s Microelectronic Systems Laboratory, has been tapped to become the next president of Turkey’s Sabancı University. Founded in 1994 and funded by the Sabancı Foundation, this dynamic university ranks among the top three in the country, and number 10 in the “World’s Best Small Universities” listing of Times Higher Education.
