Vers une mobilité plus durable à Verbier

A study commissioned by the EPFL’s Landoit & Co. “Innovations for a sustainable future” Chair

In this study, we have concluded that Verbier understands the trends and evils faced by a great many Alpine stations in terms of mobility and transport in general. These issues include traffic congestion, noise pollution, air pollution and land use. More specifically he once again points out that the Val de Bagnes station suffers from heavy dependence on the automobile both for access to and movement within the station, most notably due to the extension of its built environment. Today, this dependence clearly undermines the quality of life at the station as well as its image and attractiveness. In order to render the mobility produced at such stations more sustainable, Verbier must outline a new conception of mobility.
Based on the best practices identified at other tourist stations, and bearing in mind the measures that have or will be taken, the actors propose a research program that will lead to concrete solutions in the short, middle and long terms. Among the solutions proposed are a major qualitative leap with regard to public transport (vehicles, routes, street furniture), bottom- up services in the commute chain (direct public transport connections, P&Rs), innovation that will even counter impediments to use of alternative means of transportation (i.e. not the car), like delivery services, rental vehicles programme, Smartphone applications and the creation of a transport interface that will most likely have a structuring effect on the station’s urbanization by creating a strong urban centre.
